Call Out for Volunteer Drivers for The Orchard Club

The Orchard Club in Wey Hill offers a very important service to collect people from their homes so that they can access the club at Haslewey. Without their own transport, Orchard Club visitors would otherwise not be able to come out.

This is a call out for volunteer drivers for The Orchard Club’s wheelchair access vehicle to be able to maintain this service. The vehicle is a Kangoo and is very easy to drive. Full training and support would be given.

Please can you consider if you are able to help in some small way. It could just be an hour or 2 a week or even every other week.

If you are interested and would like to know more please speak to Hilary, Jo or Victoria 01428 658190 or pop in to Haslewey and have a chat and see what services are provided at The Orchard Club. They look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Haslemere family receive SCC Chairman’s Volunteer Awards

Last Thursday, 17th Sept, I attended the SCC Chairman’s Volunteer Awards evening where Sharon and Brian Short, and their children Clare and Jamie were recognised for their services to the community. The Short family are amazing- between them they have given 65 years of voluntary service to Scouting in Haslemere!

1st Haslemere Scout Group is one of the oldest scout groups in the country having been started SVV Volunteer Awardsin 1909 a year after Baden-Powell published Scouting for Boys. The scout group has around 100 children actively involved in the weekly meetings and other events. 1st Haslemere Scout Group is part of Haslemere District which encompasses the scout groups of Camelsdale, Chiddingfold, Churt, Fernhurst, Grayshott, Haslemere & Hindhead.

SVV Volunteer AwardsFor the past 20 years, 1st Haslemere Scout Group has been run by the Sharon and Brian Short; their two children, Clare and Jamie, are also actively involved in group. The whole Short family are also involved in Haslemere District Scout activities.

SVV Volunteer AwardsSharon and Brian Short have been in the scouting movement for over 25 years in the Haslemere area and since 1995 have led the scout group in Haslemere.

Sharon has recently stepped down from the group scout leader role which oversees all the arrangements for the different sections beavers, cubs and scouts. Brian runs the scouts section. Clare is a scout leader for Haslemere Network Scouts and also provides training for climbing for other groups in the district. Jamie is an explorer scout leader and runs activities for 30 young adult members from around the district.

During the year the Short family dedicate a large proportion of their spare time organising activities for the group and district including;

  • Camping trips, both weekends away and week long summer expeditions.
  • Organising fund raising events for the group. Providing training and activities for other scout groups in the district. Running weekly meetings for the scouts.
  • Each year a large number of children in the Haslemere area benefit greatly from the commitment and enthusiasm of the Short family. The Shorts foster interaction between children from different backgrounds and schools around the area which leads to relationships that would not normally be formed.

Improving Cycling in Haslemere

Do you have any ideas for schemes to improve cycling in Haslemere?

The Haslemere and Western Villages Task Group is meeting next week on September 17th to discuss the way forward for cycling in Haslemere and the surrounding villages, as part of the new Surrey County Council Cycle Strategy.

I am meeting with Surrey County Council officers on Monday, September 14th at Haslemere train station for a town cycle ride to identify ways in which the town could be made safer and more attractive for cyclists. If anyone would like to join us to share your ideas you would be most welcome. Please let me know your ideas and/or if you would like to meet via my Facebook page, Twitter, or e-mail on nikki.barton@surreycc.gov.uk.

A refreshing breeze of independence

The Haslemere Town Council and Waverley Borough Council independent candidates wrote a letter to The Haslemere Herald this week but the letter was not published. Here it is:

A refreshing breeze of independence

Dear Sir

In an e-mail to members of the Local Government Association (Independent Group) this month, the Vice Chair, Marianne Overton MBE, opens by saying:

“It is clear that there is a refreshing breeze of Independence now flowing in and rooting in our Councils. Our Independent group members of all shades are strong local representatives, well connected with their communities and determined to concentrate on putting residents first.”

The Vice Chair signs off with the words:

“Our members bring a more listening and more inclusive government that looks at the facts, focuses on residents and leads to far better decisions. That I hope is what is on the way!”

Up and down the land there are more than 1,700 independent councillors representing 7.5m people in 39 councils.

On 7th May there is a unique opportunity to elect twelve independent councillors to represent you on Haslemere Town Council and Waverley Borough Council.

If elected, we will be answerable not to a political party but to our constituents and our consciences. We commit to core principles of openness, transparency and accountability.

Please feel free to get in touch with us if you would like more information about our campaign. We are on independents@haslemerefirst.com
